Life Safe has an excellent team of instructors who share our value of putting the customers first.

Confidence

Life Safe courses will build our participant's confidence in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with an automated external defibrillator (AED). You will know important steps to perform at the standards when performing CPR skills, basic life saving skills and basic life support skills. Basic life saving steps include recognizing that an emergency exists, preparing to respond to lower the risk of Infection, when to call EMS/9-1-1, and the legal issues around first aid. Additionally, Life Safe training will equip you with the knowledge of CPR compression depth and chest compression rates, proper chest recoil during compression-only CPR, mouth-to-mouth breathing, what to do if the rescue breaths don't go in, and when you can stop CPR. Furthermore, you will know about special considerations during CPR such as CPR for a pregnant woman, the air in the stomach, vomiting, and mouth-to-stoma breathing.

By completing a Life Safe certification, you will be able to identify someone in shock, how to provide first aid for someone, and how to do a follow-up secondary assessment. You will understand breathing emergencies such as how to identify asthma versus allergic reactions, and how to use asthmatic inhalers and EpiPens. You will understand circulation emergencies such as cardiovascular disease, heart attack and angina, stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA), and know how to control life-threatening bleeding using a tourniquet. You will be able to recognize cardiac arrest in adults, children, infants, men and women.

Basic Life Support for healthcare providers will know all of the above as well as how to perform a basic rapid assessment, perform basic life support, and advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation CPR skills (BLS CPR). Healthcare providers will work as a team to increase chest compression fraction (on-chest time) while using an automated external defibrillation AED. Our healthcare providers will be well prepared to do BLS in Toronto.

Life Safe provides online courses as well as in-person courses.

FAQ

What First Aid Course Do I Need?

WSIB requires someone trained in first aid to be present near a first aid kit at all times of operation (Regulation 1101).

If you work with 1-5 employees at the same time, someone who is certified in Emergency First Aid needs to be present during hours of operation.

If you with 6+ employees at the same time, someone who is certified in Standard First Aid needs to be present during hours of operation.

If you work with children or work with more than 5 employees, you need standard first aid.

If you work with up to 5 employees you need Emergency First Aid.

If you are a healthcare professional, such as a nurse, you need BLS (Basic Life Support).

If you are a personal trainer, you need CPR.

Can First Aid Training Be Done Online?

First aid courses can be done partially online. There are no WSIB-approved first aid courses in Canada that are fully online. There must be an in-class portion.

Why Is First Aid Important?

You never know when an emergency might happen. First aid classes teach you how to treat common medical illnesses and physical injuries. You are likely to provide first aid to someone you know. Furthermore, survival rates for someone experiencing cardiac arrest are doubled when early CPR is performed.

Can I Be Sued For Doing First Aid?

The Good Samaritan Act protects you from most legal liabilities. You will not be sued successfully if you do what you are trained to do and stay with the patient. In other words, don't be negligent and don't abandon your patient and you will be all right.

Are First Aid Courses Hard?

No. However, there is a written test and a scenario you must successfully pass by the end of the course. Don't worry, it is the instructor's job to ensure you know everything, and that there are language accommodations

How Long Do CPR Certifications Last?

Standard First Aid lasts for 3 years.

Emergency First Aid lasts for 3 years.

CPR-C lasts for 3 years.

BLS (Basic Life Support) lasts for 1 year

Does First Aid Certification Expire?

Yes. First aid, CPR, and BLS classes all expire. If your certificate is expired you can not do recertification. You must do a full course.

Who Needs To Take BLS?

BLS, Basic Life Support, is a course for healthcare professionals, first responders, and public safety professionals such as nurses, paramedics, firefighters, dentists, dental assistants and some personal support workers.
